Before the OSS project began, the Free Software Foundation(FSF), founded to help protect and pursue the rights of free software, was already established.

According to the FSF, free software is a matter of liberty, not price. The FSF believes that the free software is the freedom for the user to run, copy, distribute, study, change, and improve software.

The FSF's main project is the GNU project started in 1984 to develop a complete unix like OS. GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix.

Linux is composed of the Linux Kernel and many GNU programs and utilities.

Some popular GNU tools that are used frequently are :

and lots more........


Due to large number of GNU tools used within linux many insist on calling Linux "GNU/Linux" or "Lingnux".
